Morendat Institute Of Oil & Gas, National Polytechnic
The Morendat Institute of Oil & Gas National Polytechnic (MIOG), a Kenya Pipeline Company (KPC) owned institution, has emerged as a regional centre of excellence in oil and gas training, following its establishment in 2014 during the 3rd Heads of State Summit in Kigali, Rwanda where Presidents from Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, and South Sudan agreed on the need to bolster human capital for the Northern Corridor Integration Projects (NCIP), marking the beginning of the institute's journey.
Over the years, MIOG has expanded its footprint across the East African region, now operating campuses in Nairobi, Naivasha, and Eldoret. Its academic offerings span diploma and certificate programs, alongside specialized courses in health, safety, and environmental (HSE) management, as well as industry-focused short courses.
The Nairobi campus serves as a technical training hub, hosting a state-of-the-art welding school, workshops for mechanical and pipeline operations, instrumentation and control, as well as a training and testing laboratory. To enhance training and practical experience, Smart Classroom technology blends theoretical instruction with practical training, aligning MIOG’s programs with international education standards.
In Naivasha, MIOG operates a fully fledged training and conferencing centre, nestled in the Great Rift Valley. The facility offers 51-bed accommodation and conference rooms with seating capacities ranging from 15 to 150, supporting the needs of corporate training.
Meanwhile, in Eldoret, the institute launched a high-end Fire and Safety Training Centre, the only one of its kind in the region. The facility is equipped to deliver advanced firefighting and occupational safety courses, reflecting KPC’s strong emphasis on safety, responding to the industry’s needs, and growing regulatory requirements.
To further its mission, MIOG has partnered with global and regional bodies to offer internationally accredited programs. It is currently the only NEBOSH-approved training and assessment centre in Kenya. The recent collaboration with the South African Institute of Welding (SAIW), the American Welding Society (AWS), and the International Institute of Welding (IIW) has made it the sole provider of globally recognized welding certifications in the region.
In a move to make technical certification more inclusive, MIOG is also an accredited centre for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). This initiative allows individuals with informal or on-the-job experience to undergo skills assessment and obtain official certification.
With strategic partnerships and industry-driven curricula, MIOG is positioning itself not only as a national leader but also as a regional training powerhouse in the oil and gas sector.
