The Kenyan tourism landscape is set to receive a significant boost as MIOG-NP in partnership with the Tourism Fund, graduated 139 trainees from its intensive Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) upskilling program on 20th February, 2026.
The auspicious ceremony, held at the Morendat Training and Conference Centre (MTCC), celebrated a cohort of professionals equipped to elevate service standards across Nakuru and Narok Counties—two of Kenya’s most critical tourism hubs.
The graduands completed structured competency-based training designed to strengthen practical workplace skills. Moreover, the programme formally recognized their prior industry experience, providing an official pathway for validating experiential learning.
Led by the Guest of Honor and MIOG leadership, the ceremony began with a symbolic tree-planting session, reflecting a shared commitment to environmental sustainability.
Advancing Skills Through RPL
The programme supports the Government’s Recognition of Prior Learning initiative, which assesses, validates, and certifies skills gained through workplace experience.
Consequently, practitioners without formal academic certification can benchmark their competencies against national occupational standards. In turn, this improves employability, career mobility, and professional recognition.
The programme also promotes productivity and service excellence within Kenya’s tourism and hospitality industry.
Areas of Training
The 139 graduands were trained in several hospitality disciplines, including food production, baking technology, housekeeping and laundry operations, front office services, food and beverage service, barista skills, and events management.
The training programme was structured to mirror real workplace operations, ensuring participants gained both technical competence and industry-relevant experience.
Leadership and Stakeholder Participation
The ceremony brought together industry stakeholders and institutional leaders, reflecting strong multi-sector collaboration in workforce development.
The Chief Guest, Patrick Ngere, representing the Tourism Fund, highlighted the importance of practical skills investment “Investing in practical skills development is essential for strengthening Kenya’s tourism industry and ensuring the workforce remains competitive and industry ready.”
The MIOG fraternity was represented by Dr. Nancy Kosgei, who emphasized the institution’s commitment to skills development “Our commitment is to bridge the skills gap in the hospitality sector by delivering competency-based training that recognizes both experience and professional excellence.”
Also in attedance was Ms Karwitha representing the RPL Delivery Unit under the State Department for TVET , Dr.Destaings Nyenyi Nyongesa, Head of Research and Innovation at BIHC, and Ms. Rhoda Chemoiwa, Principal, Maasai Mara TVC.
Their participation underscored the importance of multi-stakeholder collaboration in strengthening Kenya’s tourism workforce and skills ecosystem.
Strengthening Hospitality Training
This graduation highlights the growing impact of industry-driven training at MIOG-NP. Additionally, it positions the Morendat School of Hospitality as an emerging centre of excellence in the tourism sector.
By integrating RPL certification pathways with upskilling programmes, the institution responds to national workforce priorities. At the same time, it creates clearer career progression pathways for hospitality practitioners.
As Kenya continues investing in tourism as a key economic sector, such initiatives will support a skilled and competitive workforce.
