Research Workshop

As part of the STI agenda, MIOG recently convened a high level Research and Innovation Workshop at its MTCC Campus in Naivasha, bringing together Deans of Science from over 13 universities, including Moi University, Kenyatta University, Embu University, Zetech University, Karatina University, and Africa Nazarene University.

The two-day workshop focused on aligning academic research with practical industry applications, especially in energy and engineering. In her opening remarks, MIOG Director Dr. Nancy Kosgei emphasized the institute’s role in anchoring research within sustainable development frameworks.
Keynote speaker Prof. Dr. Kisilu Kitainge was on hand to remind participants that impactful research must respond to community needs. Prof. Kimani Chege highlighted the need for institutional synergy, while Prof. Dr. Eng. E. Ataro called for stronger funding structures, policy frameworks, and research capacity building.

Key Workshop Highlights:

  • Upholding Research Integrity: Emphasis on ethical standards, robust methodology, and credible publishing
  • Academia–Industry Linkages: Calls for harmonized curricula, shared infrastructure, and joint research
    initiatives
  • Embracing Innovation Frontiers: Exploration of Artificial Intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), renewable energy, smart agriculture, and materials science
  • Data-Driven Community Solutions: Adoption of design thinking and data analytics to address real-world challenges

A significant outcome was the formation of a dedicated Academic– Industry Linkage Team, housed at MIOG, to coordinate research partnerships, internships, faculty exchange, and implementation of MOUs. The team comprising Prof. Ataro, Prof. Kimani, Eng. Yolanda Muyonga and Prof. Cheruiyot will work in collaboration with the newly formed State Department for Science, Research and Innovation (STI).
In addition, the team will strengthen the visibility and credibility of African research through regular publications, open calls for papers, and broader academic inclusion in the AJEET
journal.
