On 9th September 2025, the Morendat Institute of Oil & Gas National Polytechnic (MIOG-NP) launched the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) Programme, marking a milestone in Kenya’s journey toward valuing skills and empowering its workforce.
Across Kenya, countless artisans, welders, mechanics, and technicians have long driven industries forward with expertise gained through years of practice. Yet without formal certification, many have found themselves excluded from better opportunities. The RPL programme changes this, ensuring that skills and experience now count as qualifications.
Registered as an official RPL Assessment Centre by the Technical and Vocational Education and Training Authority (TVETA) in 2024, MIOG-NP is now offering skilled workers a fair and accessible pathway to certification. Candidates showcase their experience through CVs, references, and work samples, then undergo practical assessments and interviews. Successful applicants are awarded certificates and transcripts recognized under the Kenya National Qualifications Framework (KNQF).
The programme directly supports Kenya’s industrial and energy ambitions. At MIOG-NP, the focus areas include high-demand trades such as ISO 9606 Welding Certifications, AWS Sense Level I, International Institute of Welding Diplomas and advanced welding and fabrication disciplines like SMAW, GMAW (MIG), GTAW (TIG), and OFW. These certifications ensure that graduates are job-ready and globally competitive.
The impact of the RPL programme will be felt across every level of society. For workers, it offers long-overdue recognition of their skills, paving the way for career growth and further education. For employers, it builds a pool of certified talent that is ready to meet industry standards and fuel productivity. And for Kenya as a whole, it strengthens the labor market, reduces underemployment, and positions the nation’s workforce to compete on a global stage.
Applications for the RPL programme are now open. Interested candidates can apply through www.miog.ac.ke, email miog@kpc.co.ke, or call 0704801596 / 0713693379.
