MIOG-NP played a key role in advancing regional capacity building during the 11th Oil and Gas Convention (OGC), held from 28th to 29th April 2026 at Speke Resort Munyonyo, Uganda. The event was organized by the Uganda Chamber of Energy and Minerals (UCEM), the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development (MEMD), and the Uganda National Oil Company (UNOC). It was held under the theme: “First Oil: Fulfil the Promise: Forging the Future.”

The convention brought together industry leaders, policymakers, and technical experts. They discussed Uganda’s progress toward first oil production. In addition, they explored strategies for infrastructure development and long-term operations.

High-Level Representation and Industry Engagement

Dr. Nancy Kosgei, Director of MIOG, represented the Acting Managing Director of Kenya Pipeline Company PLC, Mr. Pius Mwendwa, at the CEO’s Breakfast Meeting. This session took place before the official opening of the convention. It provided a platform for high-level discussions on regional energy integration and investment opportunities.

Furthermore, Dr. Kosgei participated as a key speaker in a panel session on human capacity development in oil and gas. She highlighted the importance of structured training institutions in preparing a skilled workforce. She also emphasized the need to align training with industry demands across East Africa.

The panel featured industry experts, including Chris O. Onyekwere and Christine Ssentenza. Together, they discussed ways to strengthen local talent. In particular, they focused on practical training, collaboration, and international standards.

Addressing the Oil and Gas Skills Gap

Throughout the convention, stakeholders highlighted the urgent need for over 15,000 skilled professionals. These workers are required to support Uganda’s transition to first oil. Major projects include the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP), Tilenga, and Kingfisher.

However, several challenges remain. For instance, there is a mismatch between academic training and industry needs. In addition, limited hands-on experience continues to affect workforce readiness. There is also continued reliance on expatriate expertise.

As a result, stakeholders emphasized the need for practical, industry-driven training programmes. These programmes will help bridge the skills gap and improve workforce readiness.

MIOG’s Role in Capacity Building

Through its participation, MIOG reaffirmed its commitment to skills development in the region. The institute continues to deliver competency-based training aligned with industry needs. Moreover, it focuses on practical skills, safety standards, and global best practices.

As the energy sector evolves, MIOG remains dedicated to producing industry-ready professionals. This approach ensures graduates can meet both regional and international demands.

Strengthening Partnerships and Regional Collaboration

In addition to technical discussions, Dr. Kosgei and the KPC delegation engaged industry stakeholders at the KPC-sponsored exhibition booth. These interactions created opportunities for strategic partnerships. They also strengthened MIOG’s presence in regional oil and gas training.

Industry Insights and Field Exposure

Delegates also visited Kabalega Industrial Park (KIP) in Hoima. During the visit, the Petroleum Authority of Uganda shared insights into the country’s oil and gas journey.

The tour highlighted key infrastructure projects, including the Uganda Oil Refinery, Kabalega International Airport, and the EACOP hub. It also showcased investment opportunities in supporting industries.

According to the Petroleum Authority of Uganda, the sector has attracted over USD 12 billion in investment. Additionally, more than 1,200 companies are involved, and over 20,000 direct jobs have been created as of March 2026.

Driving the Future of Oil and Gas Training in East Africa

MIOG’s participation in the convention reinforces its role as a regional leader in oil and gas training. The institute continues to build a skilled workforce to support the growing energy sector.

Through strategic partnerships and industry-aligned programmes, MIOG is bridging the skills gap. Ultimately, it is contributing to sustainable growth in the oil and gas industry across East Africa.
